With nearly two decades of experience as a consultant and legal advisor in the technology and financial services fields, Aki Estrella brings a breadth of knowledge in innovation and law. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from the prestigious liberal arts school, Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, she shifted her attention to the law and attended law school in rainy Seattle. She became interested in technology and began her career at a small corporate law firm, assisting tech companies with all aspects of their businesses. An experienced attorney, she has aided businesses by providing innovative, efficient, and creative solutions in areas including technology transactions, product development, fundraising and privacy.
Her work has assured clients that their businesses stay compliant with state, federal and international regulations, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in compliance related fees. Aki's work has also focused on the development of products like phone apps, software and cloud platforms. Privacy is fundemental in all aspects of business today and Aki works with engineers, data scientists and other researchers to ensure that privacy is top of mind in the development of new ideas for market.
She holds bar admissions in Washington state, New York, and Illinois and she is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP). She remains current on all things privacy through the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
Outside of the workplace, Aki has been very involved in connecting her legal community with her personal community. As a young attorney in Seattle, she co-founded the Washington State LGBTQ bar association, QLAW, with one of the law students she had mentored and several others. She has also dedicated her time as a grant and scholarship committee member for the philanthropic Pride Foundation, in addition to serving on its Board of Directors for several years. She has been an active member of the Black Women Lawyer’s Association of Chicago, where she co-chaired the Young Lawyer’s Committee and she is a member of the American Bar Association’s Business Law Section where she was awarded a fellowship and has served as Business Law Section Financial Services Privacy Subcommittee Young Lawyer Liaison.
When not working or supporting her communities, Aki can be found in the company of her two dogs (Darryl and Edith), taking culinary adventures with her friends or undertaking a variety of home improvement projects. She is also a competitive weight lifter and spends a great deal of time trying to make her coach laugh. This is mostly so he will be too distracted to make her do more squats.
